Ashtanga yoga-

From the teachings of Sri K Pattabhi Jois, director and founder of the Ashtanga yoga research institute in Mysore, India, Ashtanga is a specialised sequence of postures that flow, like a dance with the breath.

The word Ashtanga means eight limbs- Ashta-Eight, Anga-Limbs- and originates from the writings of Patanjali and are the foundations of all yoga practice.

The eight limbs of yoga are-

  1. Yama- (moral codes)
  2. Niyama- (self discipline and observation)
  3. Asana- (posture)
  4. Pranayama- (breath control)
  5. Pratyahara- (Sense withdrawal)
  6. Dharana- (Concentration)
  7. Dhyana- (Meditation)
  8. Samadhi- (Profound state of peace and stillness)

Ashtanga yoga is a unique form of yoga practice in that the demanding physical postures are all  joined together by means of a Vinyasa, (synchronisation of breath and movement),  and for each posture there is a Drishti, (Focus point), to encourage the mind to focus and allow awareness to be drawn into the body.  Internal muscles are also engaged by using Bandhas, (muscle contractions or energy seals), which regulate the flow of Prana, (energy).

The primary series of Ashtanga yoga is known as Yoga Chikitsa, which means yoga therapy.  The many benefits of practice include re-aligning your spine, detoxifying, purifying and rebalancing your mind, your body and your senses.

The series of about 70 postures takes up to 2 hours to complete beginning with sun salutations and a sequence of standing and seated postures, backbends and inversions, followed by relaxation.

Ashtanga yoga strengthens and tones your body, improves balance, flexibility, mobility and stamina, and is ideal for anyone who wishes to strengthen and improve their yoga practice.

"Since starting the Ashtanga Yoga class with Ann-Marie, it has had such a vast impact on my life as an individual. How I see things around me and cope with day-to day life. Having battled an addiction in my early 20's, Ashtanga has helped me turn my life around and somehow helped me achieve a state of joy and peace within, which I always thought was impossible.

It has improved my independence, awareness and concentration, my ability to remain grounded yet open minded, as well as teaching me the importance of discovering equilibrium between mind, body and spirit whilst improving my overall vitality.   I have learned to 'slow down' and listen to my body.

Ann-Marie is such an inspirational teacher, who always has your best interest and well being at heart as a student. Each class offers different variations of postures for all abilities and levels of practice; whether you want to push yourself to new limits or just escape the stresses of modern day life. Ann-Marie's extensive range of knowledge for yoga, human anatomy and sports injury always provides a reassuringly comfortable environment to practice within.

I would recommend the Ashtanga class to anyone and everyone; as it has helped me achieve what I thought was impossible.

Yoga is my instrument to a balance between all things in life.

I look forward to many more of Ann-Marie's classes to come....Namaste!"
